Smile of the Day

Life is getting much too serious, yes? Who doesn't need a daily smile?

Man's allotted span

God granted man 25 years of life, and each of the animals 50 years of life. Man felt this was a little unfair. God told man that He was willing to be flexible: if any animal were willing to give up a part of its allotted lifespan to man.

First, man asked the horse: and the horse generously gave man half its allotted lifespan.
Next, man asked the dog: and the dog generously gave man half its allotted lifespan.
Finally, man asked the monkey: and the monkey generously gave man half its allotted lifespan.

And so it was that man's allotted lifespan increased by 75 years, so that today man can often live to a ripe age of 100 years.
  • For the first 25 years he lives as a man.
  • For the second 25 years he works like a horse.
  • For the third 25 years he lives like a dog.
  • And for the last 25 years he lives as a monkey.
