Smile of the Day

Life is getting much too serious, yes? Who doesn't need a daily smile?

Assigned to help copy the old canons and laws of the church, the young, newly-vowed monk notices that they are all copying from earlier copies, not from the original manuscripts. He asks the abbot about this, and the abbot nods and acknowledges that, if anyone had made even a small error in the original copies, it would not only never be picked up, but would be reinforced for centuries in all the subsequent copies. So the abbot takes a set of new copies with him, down into the dark vault under the monastery where all the originals are kept; and unlocks it for the first time in hundreds of years.

Hours pass. One meal, then another. No one has seen the old abbot all day. Worried, the young monk and a couple of his brothers go down to the vault to check up on the abbot ... only to find him sobbing and wailing uncontrollably. "But father," cries out the young monk, "what is wrong?"

"Oh, my brethren! The word was celeb r ate!"
