Problem solving

During the 1960s space race, the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) decided it needed a ballpoint pen to write in the micro-gravity confines of its space capsules. After considerable research and development, the Astronaut Pen was developed at a cost of USD ~$1 million. The pen worked, and also enjoyed a brief vogue as a novelty item back here on earth.

Faced with the same problem, the Soviet Union used a pencil.
