Smile of the Day

Life is getting much too serious, yes? Who doesn't need a daily smile?

Wednesday, February 7

On the other hand, in Europe and Asia, it has been so consistently warm that alpine skiing was often either cancelled or moved, and Japan's Sapporo City had to truck in snow to be able to hold its annual Sapporo Yuki Matsuri. Irony: of course I waited to write this until parts of Britain ended up with an actual 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) snow day! (For the sake of sanity, don't compare with upstate New York ;) ) Thus:

... For months the archaeologists had been toiling deep in the peat of the Scots highlands, carefully clearing away heather and gorse, from faint and ancient traces of broad winding avenues, giant flagstones, narrow perfectly circular holes every few hundred yards ...

A golf course!

Any doubt was dispelled by the discovery of sculptures and paintings of human figures using primitive prototypes of irons or putters.

The next step was to ask the locals about traditions associated with the prehistoric golf club of the Lost City. And yes, it was soon learned that they did have legends of the Old Ones who followed a daily ritual with clubs and balls, until routed by tragedy. "If only we knew why they gave up golf," murmured one archaeologist wistfully, "making it vanish for centuries before it was re-discovered." The interpreter nodded and relayed the request.

The local, surprised, made a sweeping gesture at the tors, and the interpreter relayed his reply: "Simple. They could not afford the green fees."
